SMORE is for All Single Moms

Gail Cawley Showalter

I came out of the local library after posting a flier about our Single & Parenting  series, I was discouraged because we’ve not had the responses I’d hoped for. Questioning why I make so much effort for seemingly little interest, I got in the car and was about to leave when our of the corner of my eye I saw her – a woman walking towards me waving.

I lowered the window.

“Are you the SMORE lady?” she asked.

“Yes, I am.” Wow this was neat. I figured she had seen my license plate, but later learned she recognized me and my bright jacket of many colors.

I joined her where she was going for lunch and heard her story. Single mothers all have a story, if we will just listen.

I learned that she reads the SMORE blog regularly. In September of 2007 her husband died suddenly, leaving her with four sons, one with serious special needs. And yet she has felt that she didn’t fit as a single mom with SMORE for Women.

I hope that I convinced her otherwise. I want to list here the types moms who participate in SMORE activities.

  1. Never married moms
  2. Divorced moms
  3. Widowed moms
  4. Remarried moms who were single for a time while raising kids alone
  5. Separated moms
  6. Older moms who have raised children as single mothers
  7. Grandmothers raising grandchildren

We have an Advisory Board that includes mothers from various situations, different denominations, and races.

If you are one of our Followers or have attended a SMORE event leave a comment about your experience so other moms will know they are all welcome.

  1. As a single Mom for many, many years I can tell all others who find themselves in this situation, they are welcome. SMORE’s offers companionship, encouragement, and guidance. They offer this in the way of one day retreats centering on certain themes, a single day conference and overnight retreats. I know the upcoming class on Single Parenting will be a blessing to any that attend. The blogs are informative as well! I know you will be blessed and know YOU ARE WELCOME!

    1. Good to hear from you up in the cold country. I look forward to hearing how you are doing. Blessings!

It has been an honor and a privilege to fellowship with the Smore group. I thank God for their genuine love and kindness towards single moms. Coming from a background of being hurt by other groups such as this that said they love me and would help me, however, all I received was a broken heart. It has been refreshing to meet with Mrs. Gail and the other Smore ladies experiencing kindness in their actions and not just their words. I encourage all single moms or grandmothers of any race, culture, and church background to reach out to the Smore group-you’ll never be the same again.

    1. It makes my heart sing to read these words, Natausha. I was also blessed to see you yesterday. We continue to serve one mom at a time. I pray that you have a wonderful week.
